Marshall Lords

Terrain and Movement

There were only a finite number of terrain types in the original games, and a limited number of locations of interest. Marshall Lords allows any number of distinct terrain types, and any number of different location types. All you have to do is specify a graphic for them. This means it is possible to make hidden locations that look like normal terrain but have other attributes associated with them. Furthermore, all the attributes such as defensive bonuses are individually assigned to each location, giving the scenario writer complete control over how they behave. The extendable graphics set also means that the races in the scenario can have a distinct style of architecture.

Movement has been rationalised so that armies now have movement points. An army always moves at the slowest rate of its members, so solo commanders will typically be faster. Each scenario can have any number of movement types, which determine what terrain a unit can pass and how fast they move through it. For instance, I wanted to make mountains more of a formidable barrier, so mounted troops cannot enter them. Fey units can move more quickly through forests, and dwarves have a bonus through mountains. This system is again fully customisable.
